Our Sustainability Initiatives

Sustainability stems from within at Sky Asia Technology.

When we drive sustainability conversations around IT with customers, it is common to be asked: “What are you doing about sustainability?”

To answer this question, we have a set of initiatives that guide our daily operations. These initiatives are constantly refined and grow along with us as a business.

Read on to understand some of the work we're doing to drive sustainability in our work.

Economy over Express

Express air freight generates more CO₂ cargo than economy air freight. Express services are generally less fuel-efficient due to the priority handling and smaller cargo sizes, so the aircraft takes off whether it has a full cargo load or not.

In contrast, economy air freight, with fuller planes in terms of cargo load, is more efficient in its fuel consumption per unit of cargo. This means lower CO₂ per cargo.

Depending on how urgent the goods are needed, we put forth both options for the customer to choose. What we’ve seen is that most purchases are planned purchases - even with Economy, delivery lead times gel very nicely with customer-expected deadlines. With Economy, our customers also enjoy a lower shipping cost since freight cost is spread out across a larger cargo load.

Economy remains our preferred freight offering to customers. Where situations call for urgent shipping, Express is still available as an option.

Carriers with Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 percent compared to traditional jet fuel, making it one of the most effective tools for cutting aviation-related carbon footprints.

While SAF is currently more expensive than fossil-based jet fuel, it offers the potential for greater long-term cost stability. Unlike petroleum-based fuels, which are subject to geopolitical tensions and market volatility, SAF production can increasingly rely on renewable sources.

As production scales and technology advances, we expect SAF prices to stabilize and eventually become more competitive. This makes it not only an environmentally responsible choice but also a financially strategic one in the long run.

By prioritizing SAF in our customers’ freight decisions, all parties can play a meaningful role in accelerating the transition to a more sustainable future in aviation.

Reusing available packaging materials

Reusing packaging materials has key environmental benefits, primarily by reducing waste, conserving natural resources, and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.

By extending the life of packaging, less material needs to be extracted and processed, saving energy, lowering pollution from manufacturing and disposal, and preventing materials from entering landfills.

Where possible, existing packaging materials in good condition are reused. Any unfit for commercial use and deliveries are sent to recycling centers for proper disposal / re-purposing.

Working from home

All team members are on work from home (WFH) by default.

By eliminating the need to commute to a physical office, we help team members reduce their carbon footprint. Furthermore, WFH helps avoid stresses such as rush hour traffic and large crowds, boosting our team’s mental health.

We do recognize it is not possible to avoid face-to-face interactions altogether. Where possible, we encourage the use of public transport; for overseas travel, if sustainable air travel options are available, team members are empowered to choose these options.

Cloud-first

Our IT infrastructure is cloud-first.

Data centers operated by major cloud providers are designed for efficiency at scale, often using advanced cooling technologies, energy-optimized hardware, and proactive technologies to reduce power consumption.

Leading cloud providers investing heavily in wind, solar, and other clean energy sources to power their data centers. With our workloads in the cloud, we indirectly tap into these renewable-powered facilities. The result is that our carbon footprint is lowered, without needing to build or manage green infrastructure ourselves.
